Born in Georgia to a military family, Calvin Royal III spent his early years moving from one army base to another before settling in Tampa Bay, Florida. Encouraged by his grandmother’s love of the arts, he first explored music through the piano before discovering dance in a community production of The Chocolate Nutcracker, igniting a passion for movement and storytelling.

Royal began formal ballet training at fourteen at the Pinellas County Center for the Arts. Within two years, he became a finalist at Youth America Grand Prix, leading to a full scholarship to American Ballet Theatre’s Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School. He went on to join ABT Studio Company before entering the main company in 2010. He was promoted to Soloist in 2017 and Principal Dancer in 2020, becoming the third African American dancer in ABT’s history to achieve the rank.

Known for his elegance, musicality, and emotional depth, Royal has performed leading roles across the classical and contemporary repertoire, including Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet, Giselle, George Balanchine’s Apollo, The Firebird, and the title role in Othello. His performances have been widely acclaimed, with The New York Times describing him as “a marvel of rhythm, line, character, and immediacy” and “the most elegant male dancer in the company.”

Throughout his career, Royal has worked with many of today’s leading choreographers and creative voices, including Twyla Tharp, Alonzo King, Kyle Abraham, Christopher Wheeldon, Benjamin Millepied, and Misty Copeland. A featured artist at the Vail Dance Festival since 2015, he was named Artist-in-Residence in 2020 and 2021, creating and performing in new works and cross-disciplinary collaborations with artists from across dance and music.

Royal’s artistic practice has increasingly expanded beyond performance into artistic leadership and curation. He serves as Associate Artistic Director at Harlem Stage, contributing to the organization’s artistic programming and interdisciplinary work. His curatorial projects include UNITE, a global ballet program he curated and co-produced at The Joyce Theater, and Black Men in Dance, co-curated for Harlem Stage’s E-Moves Festival, reflecting an ongoing interest in creating spaces for artistic exchange, discovery, and connection.

His creative presence has also extended into fashion and culture through campaigns and collaborations with Theory, GAP, Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, Canali, and HOKA, as well as his role as a Tastemaker for The Luxury Collection. Across performance, collaboration, and artistic leadership, Royal’s work continues to explore the intersections of movement, identity, and storytelling, guided by a belief in art’s capacity to connect people and expand what feels possible.
